Background

Treasure Health, a non-profit serving Martin and St. Lucie counties, offers grief support, pediatric care, community education, and hospice services. Founded in 1982 as a hospice, it now serves over 3,000 patients annually, with dedicated volunteers and medical professionals providing high-quality care.

Use Case

The foundation’s extended network of patients, volunteers, and medical professionals generates different types of reports through SAP Crystal Reports for recordkeeping and extracting intelligible insights. However, creating these reports requires manually mapping data coming from its Electronic Medical Records (EMR) solution, mumms Software, taking up a lot of their time. With operations across multiple facilities, mumms Software stores patient and staff data in a PostgreSQL database in JSON format, exporting it as Excel files for reporting.

Moreover, SAP Crystal Reports couldn’t save report templates for future use. While mumms Software managed the foundation’s records, Treasure Health wanted to maintain their own in-house database for quicker access and future flexibility, especially if they chose to move away from mumms Software.

Another issue was mumms Software’s hourly database updates. The process involved deleting and reloading data, causing 2-4 minutes of downtime each time, adding up to 50-100 minutes daily. This downtime, along with communication delays and slow query responses, raised concerns about mumms Software’s reliability.

They sought a solution that could optimize the report generation process, as well as maintain a history of all records in an internally managed database.

Enter Astera

Treasure Health wanted to automate and simplify the process by creating standard templates for different types of reports to quickly generate day-to-day reports for decision making. A simple query now triggers predefined workflows, reducing a multi-step procedure to a single step. Astera manages everything, from sourcing data from mumms’ database to parsing and transforming it for use in Crystal Reports. Custom reports can now be generated easily without the need for manual data mapping, even when new fields or data types are added, due to Astera’s reusable workflows.

What once took over an hour to download data now takes just 15 minutes. With Astera’s data parsing and transformation capabilities, the entire data preparation process is completed in only 25 minutes, bringing the total time down to just 40 minutes.
